Bargains at Swansea Museum’s Local History Book Fair, Saturday, 24 October 2015

This Saturday, 24 October 2015, staff from the Royal Commission will once again be attending The Royal Institution of South Wales’s annual Local History Book Fair at Swansea Museum between 10am and 4 pm. The day will offer the opportunity to buy new local history books, second-hand and antiquarian books, historical maps and paintings, postcards and much more. Authors, publishers and bookshops, representatives of local history societies, as well as staff from the Royal Commission, will be on-hand throughout the day to answer enquiries and chat to visitors. In particular, this year we will be offering a special discount of 50% or less on many of our publications. These will include:

Huw Edwards Reopens Historic Ceredigion Chapel

This Friday, 10 July, Hen Gapel, Rhydowen, will re-open its doors to the public after undergoing a £153,000 restoration programme under the care of Addoldai Cymru: The Welsh Religious Buildings Trust.

As part of the opening the Royal Commission will launch its new digital resource, ‘Hen Gapel: A Virtual Museum’. Built on the gaming platform Unity, this digital museum allows the user to explore independently the chapel and its environs while reading a series of virtual ‘books’ that tell the history of the building and its congregations, and experiencing two immersive experiences.

This small chapel in the heart of Ceredigion is significant for the part it has played in the religious and political history of the area. Founded in 1726 by Jenkin Jones, one of the first Unitarian preachers in Wales, it famously made national headlines for the ‘Troed Allan’ when the minister and congregation were locked out of the building by the Tory landlord for supporting the liberal candidate in the election of 1876. By two o’clock that Sunday afternoon, 26 October, a crowd of some three thousand people had assembled at the gates to the chapel, arriving by foot, horseback and carts. Refusing to make forcible entry to the building, the Rev. William Thomas (commonly known by his bardic name Gwilym Marles) preached a powerful sermon from the steps of the burial ground. The history of the chapel is also intertwined with the evictions of tenant farmers and their subsequent emigration to America, including that of the family of Frank Lloyd Wright, and the development of the ‘ y Smotyn Du’, the Black Spot of Unitarianism.

BBC broadcaster Huw Edwards, a patron of Addoldai Cymru and the Royal Commission will symbolically hand the key of the building to minister Wyn Thomas as part of the re-opening ceremonies, mirroring the handing back of the chapel in 1879. The Grade II* chapel is now in the care of Addoldai Cymru and will find a new life as a centre for the local community.

Community Archaeologist works with YAC

I have been involved with the Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) for a few years now as an assistant leader. The recent work and training I have been doing with the Royal Commission has allowed me to put all these skills into practice with YAC.

YAC is the only UK-wide club for young people aged up to 17 interested in archaeology. The club is run by the Council for British Archaeology; an educational charity working for over 65 years to promote ‘Archaeology for All’. YAC’s vision is for all young people to have opportunities to be inspired and excited by archaeology, and to empower them to help shape its future.

YAC was started 40 years ago in August 1972 by Dr Kate Pretty. Its name then was Young Rescue and it was the junior branch of RESCUE, the British Archaeological Trust. Initially it was just going to be based in Cambridge but after publicity in The Times it was launched as a national club.

Last week I led a session for the Swansea YAC on oral histories and I thought you might like to see what we got up to.

I started the session with a presentation on Oral History, which included interview techniques and how to use the recording equipment. We then put this into practice by interviewing grandparents, parents and each other about growing up and living in Swansea.

In previous sessions we had been working on a First World War theme, which we then continued with in the second half of the session. I had brought in a First World War themed handling collection including letters, postcards and artefacts, which we scanned. I also brought in Ordnance Survey maps from the period and modern ones along with aerial photographs and they had a great time comparing everything. We finished the session by making poppy wreaths.
