Darganfyddwch Darddiad Afon Wysg ar Daith Gerdded Fawr Gymreig y Comisiwn Brenhinol, 9 Mai 2015

Cymylau isel yn y mynyddoedd lle mae tarddiad Afon Wysg.
Yn dilyn llwyddiant taith gerdded y llynedd o Fan Llia i Fan Dringarth a arweiniwyd gan y Comisiwn Brenhinol fel rhan o Daith Gerdded Fawr Gymreig Cerddwyr Cymru, a gynhelir bob blwyddyn drwy gydol mis Mai, mae taith gyffrous arall wedi’i threfnu ar gyfer eleni mewn partneriaeth â Cadw a Cherddwyr Cymru. Ar Ddydd Sadwrn, 9 Mai bydd ein huwch archaeolegydd David Leighton yn arwain taith gerdded ddiddorol a difyr ar hyd rhannau uchaf Afon Wysg mor bell â’i tharddiad (o dan glogwyni Fan Brycheiniog a Bannau Sir Gaer), ac ochr ddwyreiniol bellaf y Mynydd Du. Bydd y daith gerdded gylchol hon, 11 km o hyd, yn cychwyn o’r ardal parcio a phicnic ym Mhont ar Wysg yn SN82002715. Yna byddwn yn dringo’n araf i 2000 o droedfeddi uwchlaw lefel y môr ac yn gweld amrywiaeth o safleoedd o’r cyfnodau cynhanesyddol, Rhufeinig, canoloesol a diweddarach. Ar hyd y daith fe welwn olygfeydd syfrdanol o Barc Cenedlaethol Bannau Brycheiniog, carneddau claddu o’r Oes Efydd, olion gwersyll cyrch Rhufeinig a hyd yn oed gorlan ddefaid fawr o’r bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg gyda’i hadrannau niferus. Yng nghwmni staff eraill y Comisiwn Brenhinol, gan gynnwys yr hanesydd pensaernïol Richard Suggett, bydd David Leighton yn cynnig ei arbenigedd hanesyddol ar hyd y ffordd, gan rannu’r cyfoeth o wybodaeth sydd ganddo am ardaloedd uwchdirol ar ôl treulio blynyddoedd lawer yn cydlynu Prosiect Uwchdiroedd llwyddiannus y Comisiwn Brenhinol. Mae’n argoeli bod yn ddiwrnod gwych allan i gerddwyr brwd o bob oedran a chyfle prin i ddarganfod mwy am yr hanes sydd o’n cwmpas ym mhob man!

Mae lleoedd ar gyfer y daith yn dal ar gael, er nad oes llawer ar ôl. I gael manylion pellach ac i drefnu’ch lle cysylltwch â nicola.roberts@cbhc.gov.uk.

Fel rhan o ddathliadau pen-blwydd y Cerddwyr yn 80 oed, bydd y Daith Gerdded Fawr Gymreig eleni yn fwy nag erioed! I gael mwy o fanylion, ewch i’w gwefan yn http://www.ramblers.org.uk/go-walking/big-welsh-walk.aspx.

I weld rhestr o’r teithiau cerdded treftadaeth sy’n cael eu trefnu gan Cadw, ewch i’r dudalen ddigwyddiadau ar eu gwefan: http://cadw.wales.gov.uk/events/?lang=en.

Merlod a chylch meini yn Nyffryn Wysg uchaf: un o’r safleoedd ar y daith.

Two Unique Anglesey Anniversaries

2015 marks a unique event for a celebrated village on Anglesey – a centenary and a bi-centenary.

On the 16 September 1915, the first meeting of the Women’s Institute in Britain took place in an unassuming building in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (or Llanfair PG). The movement was formed in Canada in 1897. Their aim was to revitalise rural communities and encourage the local country-women to help increase supplies of domestic food supplies during the Great War. The original meeting hall still stands, beside the old A5 trunk road through the village.

There are over 200,000 members of the WI in the UK, and the movement has evolved to become the largest women’s voluntary organisation in the country.

For the second anniversary, you only have to travel a short distance to the east of the hall, to Craig y Dinas, and the striking column that was erected in 1817 as a tribute and to Henry William Paget, the first Marquis of Anglesey. The title was awarded to him in July 1815 - in recognition of his bravery and leadership at the Battle of Waterloo, where the French army, commanded by Napoleon, was defeated by the Anglo-allied army, commanded by the Duke of Wellington and the Prussian army, led by Gebhard von Blucher, on the 18 June 1815.

Paget was the cavalry commander on that day. He and Wellington were on their horses and observing the scene before them. Grape shot from one of the very last French cannon volleys of the battle hit Paget’s right knee. He looked down and said “By God, sir, I’ve lost my leg!” Wellington instantly replied “By God, sir, so you have!”

The bronze statue was a later addition to the column. It was placed there in 1860 after Paget died, at a grand old age of 85.

AR GAEL NAWR! Cyhoeddiad Newydd gan y Comisiwn Brenhinol: ‘Llechi Cymru - Archaeoleg a Hanes’ gan David Gwyn

Ar un adeg, arferid gweld llechi o chwareli yng Nghymru ar doeau ledled y byd. Erbyn diwedd y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg, roedd cynifer â thraean o’r holl lechi to a gynhyrchid ledled y byd yn dod o Gymru, gan gystadlu â chwareli yn Ffrainc a’r Unol Daleithiau. Mae’r llyfr hwn yn olrhain y diwydiant o’i fan cychwyn yng nghyfnod y Rhufeiniaid, ei ddatblygiad canoloesol araf ac yna ei ehangiad enfawr yn y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg – yn ogystal â thrwy ei ddirywiad araf yn yr ugeinfed ganrif.

Llun o Chwarel Dinorwig o’r gorllewin, ar draws Llyn Peris (AP_2010_2454, NPRN 40538)

Mae awdur y llyfr, David Gwyn, yn creu darlun cynhwysfawr o’r diwydiant arbennig hwn ar sail astudiaeth fanwl o archaeoleg ddiwydiannol helaeth y chwareli eu hunain a thystiolaeth hanesyddol y tirweddau syfrdanol y maent wedi’u lleoli ynddynt, yn ogystal â chofnodion cyfreithiol a chofnodion cwmni, llyfrau porthladd, papurau newydd lleol a chenedlaethol, cylchgronau masnach, casgliadau o baentiadau a ffotograffau, a hanesion plwyf.

Yr injan drawst Gernywaidd yn Chwarel Dorothea, Nantlle, a adeiladwyd yn 1904-06 (DI2013_0723, NPRN 26409)

Neilltuir rhai penodau i’r chwareli eu hunain a’r dulliau a ddefnyddid i gloddio’r llechfaen a’i brosesu. Mae penodau eraill yn rhoi sylw i’r dystiolaeth am y technolegau a’i gwnaeth hi’n bosibl i greu’r chwareli – y systemau pwmpio a phŵer, y systemau cludiant mewnol a thros y tir, a’r llongau hwylio a allforiai’r llechi gorffenedig i bedwar ban byd.
